Tushar Sharma received the MSR 2026 Ric Holt Early Career Achievement Award

Tushar Sharma received the MSR 2026 General Chair Ric Holt Early Career Achievement Award at the International Conference on Mining Software Repositories (MSR 2026). He was recognized for pioneering research in code quality and Green AI, and development of widely-adopted tools for software engineering research and practice.

This award recognizes early-career researchers who have made outstanding contributions in the field of mining software repositories. The award is named after Dr. Ric Holt (1941 – 2019), a professor at the University of Waterloo who made foundational contributions to the field, including organizing the 1st International Workshop on Mining Software Repositories in 2004.

Dr. Sharma’s pioneering contributions span software code quality and Green AI, with publications across the top software engineering venues, including ICSE, FSE, TSE, TOSEM, ICSME, EMSE, and JSS. In the last few years, he has become a driving force in Green AI, spearheading research to develop sustainable AI systems without sacrificing performance. Apart from his research contributions, Dr. Sharma’s commitment to creating and maintaining high-impact software tools is exceptional. His tools, Designite, DesigniteJava, and DPy offer comprehensive code-smell detection and are now used by 219 academic institutions worldwide. It clearly highlights their significant influence on software engineering research, education, and practice. Dr. Sharma has also demonstrated impressive service and leadership. He has taken on key organizational roles at major international conferences. His contributions were recognized with the Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding work as a co-chair of SCAM 2025.
