Sharon Batt

Home Department: Bioethics
Supervisor: Dr. Janice Graham
Interdisciplinary Areas: Bioethics, Social Science and Policy

Research Interests: I am interested in advocacy by community-based health organizations. Tressie Dutchyn

Tressie Dutchyn

Home Department: Psychology
Supervisor: Dr. Patrick McGrath
Interdisciplinary Areas: Psychology and Philosophy

Research Interests: I will be researching the 'semantic underpinnings' of cancer in North American society and more importantly exploring the meaning of cancer as it applies to adolescents. This knowledge will then be used to develop a distance treatment module that will assist adolescents who are dealing with the diagnosis of cancer in a parent. Semantic underpinnings in this context refer to the meanings and associations (i.e., death and dying) the dominant culture ascribes to cancer as an illness.

Denis Falvey

Denis Falvey

Home Department: Ophthalmology
Supervisors: John Clements in Math, Keith Taylor in Science, Milan Horacek in Physiology, Thomas Trappenburg in Computing and Francois Tremblay in Ophthalmology/Electrophysiology
Interdisciplinary Areas: Mathematics, Electrophysiology, and Computational Neuroscience

Research Interests: My research interest is in quantifying retinal ischemia. In many diseases that affect the eye, the retina suffers from lack of oxygen or ischemia; of particular note is diabetic retinopathy.

To date no one has adequately quantified the degree of ischemia in the retina beyond 'This one looks worse than that one'.

I want to specifically look at the electroretinogram (ERG), which is a tracing of electromagnetic activity produced by the retina stimulated by light, using techniques arising from wavelet and Fourier analysis, Hilbert space theory, and computational neuroscience or statistical learning theory to better characterize the ERG and hopefully quantify retinal ischemia.

Susan Street

Susan Street

Home Department: Philosophy
Supervisor: Dr. Susan Sherwin
Interdisciplinary Areas: Philosophy, Health & Human Performance, Occupational Therapy

Research Interests: My main area of research involves a feminist (e.g., gender-based) analysis of women's occupational health research, with a particular emphasis on occupational health research in Canada. My proposed research will take into consideration a set of fundamental questions that have to do with determining who and what is counted as salient in women's health research, as well as identifying and understanding the gaps and barriers that interfere with full understanding of women's occupational health. Using a research design that involves a triangulation of feminist qualitative approaches, I shall argue that the "political business" of scientific health research has greatly contributed to the paucity of gender-based research that specifically addresses women's occupational health issues.
